DIVISION OF APPLIED TOXICOLOGY

OBJECTIVES

 
The main works of the division includes evaluation and study the adverse effects of agricultural chemicals and toxic substances on human and animal health as well as environment, study on risk analysis and risk management strategy of agricultural chemicals and toxic substances, and establishment of testing techniques and regulation on quality standard and other necessary requirements concerning safety evaluation of agricultural chemicals and toxic substances. In brief, other than reviewing toxicological data for pesticide registration, focus on developing various toxicity test methods or animal models for studies on chemical pesticides and bio-pesticides, and to explore the toxicology mechanism as well as to evaluate the potential hazards of chemical pesticides and bio-pesticides. In the meantime, the toxicity studies are adhering to governmental pesticide regulations for the safe and effective use of pesticides. The up-to-date achievements of the division can be summarized as follows:
1. A specific pathogen free (SPF) animal house has been constructed since 1990 and refurnished in 2009. Also, animal health monitoring system and related standard operation procedures to ensure complying with OECD Good Laboratory Practice guidelines have been established and status of GLP Laboratory was acreditted since March, 2009.
2. The following necessary testing and diagnoses techniques have been established for identifying the target organs of toxicants or pathogens:necropsy method, postmortem examinations, processing of tissues and specimens, light/electron microscopy photography.
3. To evaluate the impacts of pesticides and biopesticides on mammals, various toxicity test methods have been validated and applied, including seven testing methods for acute toxicity tests, 28-day and 90-day sub-chronic toxicity tests, genetic/epigenetic toxicity and rapid carcinogenicity tests, teratogenicity and reproductive toxicity tests, acute toxicity/pathogenicity tests for microbial agents, animal immune function tests, and acute aquatic toxicity tests. Also, the intoxication mechanism of agricultural chemicals and toxic substances and its effects on endocrine substance of organism will be actively explored.
4. Works on rodent control, including development of new bait formulation, study of rodent control measures, and efficacy studies of rodent bait.
5. Both risk analysis of zoonotic pathogens and transgenic crops in agricultural products, and calculation of RfD value during toxicological data reviewing for pesticide registration will be regularly performed to be used as reference for establishment of maximum residue limits during collection period.
